Why Do You Need a Swim Diaper?

First it's important to distinguish between swim diapers and diaper covers. Swim diapers are meant to keep 💩 poop out of the pool - full stop. It's a very important job wouldn't you agree? And a specialized one at that. Diaper covers are meant to be the waterproof layer OVER an absorbent cloth diaper that's underneath. Still very important, but quite a different function and therefore also a different cut and fit to work properly.

So what makes a swim diaper different anyway

Since the primary job of a swim diaper is to keep solids out of the pool, swim diapers are designed to let water flow through while trapping solids. If water can't flow through the swim diaper, it'll hold onto water, create a ballooning effect and puff up with heavy water that weighs baby down - potentially presenting a heavy drowning hazard.

To facilitate this water flow what you'll find in swim diapers is mesh on the inside. The mesh holds onto solids while letting liquids through...and I know what you're thinking - what about pee?!? Well, I hate to break it to you, but that's what chlorine in the pool is for. There is no absorbency in swim diapers and you shouldn't add any in either.

You'll also notice that swim diapers have a different cut and shape than other cloth diapers or diaper covers. They are cut smaller so they lay closer to the skin and have elastics all around the waist and legs. In fact, most reusable swim diapers will have double sets of elastics at the legs and it wears more like underwear than an actual cloth diaper because there is no extra room for an insert or absorbency inside.

Washable swim diapers can be worn in splash parks, public pools, to beaches and lakes and even at home in the kiddie pool or bath tub for easy clean up if a #2 comes along.

Remember, get baby out of the pool and change immediately if they do poop.

It's a good idea to have 2 handy, so if you need to change one, the other is ready to go.

How do you use a reusable swim diaper
It's very easy, swim diapers go right on the bare bum, nothing underneath and then a swim suit can go overtop if you wish (or if a double layer is required by your public pool). Wash and dry them right along with your towel and swim suits when you get home, or wash and hang to dry - they dry very quickly.
