OEKO-TEX certification is a globally recognized certification system for textile and leather products that independently ensures the products are free from harmful substances. The certification system was developed in Europe in 1992 and has since become an internationally recognized standard for textile safety.
When a cloth diaper is described in the product listing as 'OEKO-TEX certified', it means that the product has been thoroughly tested and has been found to be free from harmful substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, and harmful chemicals. The certification covers all aspects of the product, including the fabric, the dyes, and any other components used in the production process. It is rigorous testing that goes even beyond the testing required to be CPSIA compliant.
OEKO-TEX certification is a voluntary certification system done that the manufacturers own cost which means that companies that have gone through the certification process are committed to ensuring that their products are safe and free from harmful substances. By choosing cloth diapers that are OEKO-TEX certified, parents can have greater peace of mind knowing that the product they are using on their child has been thoroughly tested and meets certain globally recognized safety standards.
What does the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® label mean:
If a textile fabric carries the STANDARD 100 label, it means that every part of it including threads, buttons, and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances and found to be safe for human use. Testing is done by independent OEKO-TEX® partner institutes, using a thorough criteria catalog that takes into account numerous regulated and non-regulated substances that may be harmful to human health.
In many cases, the allowed values of the STANDARD 100 exceed national and international requirements for safety and the criteria catalog is updated at least once a year to reflect new scientific knowledge and statutory requirements.
By using the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 label, manufacturers and customers can have confidence that the product has been thoroughly tested and meets stringent safety standards, without having to keep track of the ever-changing legal requirements and scientific knowledge themselves.
Looking for this label is one additional way to have confidence in the purity of the fabrics touching your baby's skin and nowhere is this more important than in a cloth diaper.
