Signs Your Toddler Is Ready To Potty Train

How do you know when it's time to start your toddler's potty training journey? Of course it's different for every child, so how do you know when's a good time to give it a try? 

Our 4 kids were all very different as they learned to use the potty, but they did show signs that made me think 'oh, maybe we should try'...

Here are some things you can watch for you in your child that might indicate the time is right to learn this new skill:

Physical Readiness Signs

  • Waking up dry in the morning or staying dry for 2 or more hours at a time or dry during naps. This was the first thing I noticed with our first baby.
  • Having regular bowel movements, often at predictable times during the day.
  • Capable of walking to and sitting on the toilet or small potty seat.
  • Able to pull pants up and down with minimal help.

Cognitive & Behavioural Readiness Signs

  • Asking questions about the toilet or showing interest when others are using the bathroom.
  • Recognizing they need to go (hiding in a corner to poop for example) 
  • Not liking a wet or dirty diaper; asking to be changed.
  • Able to follow simple instructions (like “let's go get the potty” or “bring me that book”).
  • Ability to organize.  Putting things in proper places, lining up toys etc.

Communication Readiness Signs

  • Using words or gestures to communicate the need to go.
  • Understanding or using basic words like “pee,” “poop,” "potty" etc.

Emotional Readiness Signs

  • Showing greater independence, such as wanting to do things "myself."
  • Not being afraid of the bathroom, potty/toilet or a flushing toilet sound.
  • Ability to sit still for a few minutes at a time.
  • Wanting 'big kid' underwear instead of a 'baby diaper'

Many toddlers show some of these signs between 18 and 30 months and your child doesn't have to be doing all of them to give potty learning a try. Readiness can happen earlier or later too. 

If you try potty training and it just isn't clicking, instead of getting frustrated, it's ok to just take a break and try again in a few months. You've got this.
