Think cloth diapering has to be expensive? Think again! Yes buying a complete stash of cloth diapers upfront before your baby is born can be a big investment, but if you're thrifty, here are some ways to enjoy the benefits of cloth without breaking the bank:
Add them to your baby registry
The easiest way is to let friends and family help you build your stash. Add them to your baby registry. Even better, ask for gift cards to your favorite cloth diapering stores so you can select exactly what you want yourself. Cloth diapers may not be the first choice for people to purchase off a registry, but gift cards are much easier for others to purchase and you can often get discounts for purchasing remaining items off your registry after your baby shower too.
Ask around
Lots of families are happy to pass along their cloth diapers when they’re done using them. But no one will know you're interested in cloth diapering unless you start taking about it. Trust me, when you come across another cloth diapering family in the wild you'll be instant besties and an experienced cloth diapering Mama can be a fantastic resource when you have questions too. The longevity of cloth diapers and the ability to pay it forward is one of the beautiful aspects of choosing cloth for your baby.
Turn unneeded gifts into cloth diapers
If you receive too many disposable diapers, baby outfits or duplicate items as gifts that you know you won’t use, check the store’s return policy and put the refunds toward your cloth diaper stash.
🎁 Enter giveaways
Follow your favourite cloth diaper businesses and watch for chances to win diapers and other essentials. Make sure you follow their social media (Facebook/Instagram/TikTok/YouTube etc.) and definitely subscribe to newsletters so you don't miss any opportunities announced there.
Make your own
No you don't even need to sew for this one. Old folded cotton tshirts, clean cotton dishtowels or even trifolded cotton flannel receiving blankets can all be repurposed as cloth diaper absorbency inside a diaper cover.
Offer to be a product tester
Many cloth diaper brands will post call-outs looking for new product testers, influencers willing to do online reviews or model calls for photo shoots. Sometimes these opportunities come with free product in exchange for your participation and feedback.
Join local buy nothing groups and baby swap meets
Once you find groups local to you, add an ISO (in search of) post to help find others in the group who might have exactly what you're looking for.
Cloth diaper banks, lending libraries or diaper services
Look around your area for non profits that collect cloth diaper donations and lend them out to local families. Or, if you have a cloth diaper service nearby check with them, they may have diapers with minor damage like broken snaps or loose velcro that can no longer be used in service rotation but that are still usable with some minor repair.
You don’t need a huge budget to get started with cloth. And remember, part time cloth diapering is a thing that many families do too.💚
