Are cloth diapers too expensive? They can seem that way for sure.
Cloth diapers are an upfront investment of several hundred dollars (for a full time stash). Plus if you're considering cloth even before baby is born, how will you know if you're going to stick with it after putting in all that cash?
For a full time stash of cloth diapers, with enough to wash every second day, you'll want about 24 cloth diapers. Depending on the style and materials you choose that could run somewhere around $500-$900.
But keep in mind that while the upfront cost might look scary, cloth diapers are reused over time spreading that investment out over multiple years (or even more than one baby) depending on the kinds of diapers you select.
In contrast, disposable diapers are a smaller monthly expense incurred repeatedly over multiple years. It's an expense that kind of sneaks up on you and ads up to thousands of dollars per child. $0.25/diaper over 6000 diaper changes - don't forget the wipes. Then a few hundred disposable pull-ups during potty training ($0.40 each) with the average age of potty learning being 2.5 years and your bill ends up at $2000+ conservatively with all of those diapers, wipes and training pants ending up in the landfill for each baby (maybe even some disposable swim diapers too).
Purchasing disposables regularly over time also opens that expense to yearly inflation (prices going up in general), as well as shrinkflation (prices staying the same for fewer diapers in the box). Because baby diapers are a necessity that you can't skip purchasing, there's also issues with scarcity and shortages during difficult economic times or when supply chains and shipping routes are disrupted by worker strikes or situations like Covid when toilet paper and diapers saw empty store shelves.
A simple and thoughtfully built cloth diaper stash can sometimes even be used for multiple children and cares for our environment at the same time. It supports small businesses, local seamstresses and sustainable textiles plus they can sometimes be resold or gifted to other families when you're done with them.
