Pockets Diapers vs All In Ones

Pockets Diapers vs All In Ones

What's better, pocket diapers or AIOs?  Which should you choose?

I'm a big advocate for trying several styles and brands of cloth diapers, using them to see what you like best for your baby and then rounding out your collection with more of the kinds of diapers you love most.

But when you're first dipping your toes in to the vast research rabbit hole of cloth diapers, sometimes it's easiest just to compare on base features as you learn the ropes. So here we go.

First, if you need a refresher: What is a pocket diaper | What is an all-in-one (AIO) diaper

Pocket Diaper Pros:

  • Customizable absorbency
  • Fast drying
  • Stay dry feature
  • Readily available, lots of selection, many brands
  • Larger size ranges 7-60lbs versions now
  • Less expensive compared to AIOs

Pocket Diapers Cons:

  • Stuffing required before use; pulling insert out of cover required before washing - You have to insert and remove the absorbent insert in the waterproof cover before use which can feel like extra work.
  • More laundry pieces to keep track of - Because the inserts and shells are separate pieces there's more to keep track of.
  • Some brands cheaply made.
  • Mostly synthetic fabrics.

AIO Diaper Pros:

  • Convenient - Probably the biggest benefit is their ease of use especially for babysitters, daycare and other caregivers.  It's as close to a disposable as you can get.
  • One piece design and no insert matching or assembly is required before use.
  • Trim fit.
  • Natural fabric options are more prevalent with AIOs.
  • Easiest diaper style for newbies or those hesitant to try cloth.

AIO Diaper Cons:

  • Longer dry time - The absorbent layers are sewn in so they take longer to dry.
  • Less customizable - The absorbency is already in the diaper and they aren't designed to take too much extra.
  • Most expensive.
  • Wash issues - If your wash routine isn't solid, the many connected layers of an AIO are most likely to have issues first.

Which Should You Choose?
Ultimately it really depends on your priorities. If convenience is key and you want a diaper that’s ready to go straight out of the dryer, AIOs may be your perfect match. They're great for babysitters or quick changes on the go.

If you prefer more flexibility, a more budget-friendly option, or prefer faster drying times, pocket diapers may work better for you. But, many parents use a mix of diaper styles.  You might have AIOs for outings and babysitters, and pockets at home for example.  There's no right way to build a diaper collection that works for you. Whichever you pick, you're making a wonderful choice for the planet—and your little one.
