Since 2010
Nobody bought the cloth diapers on your registry did they.
You spent so much time researching, figuring out what you needed to prepare your home for your new addition and you really hoped guests would select from the list of things you needed. Instead you got knitted sweaters, disposable diapers, a duplicate of the baby chair you already had and a lot of unsolicited advise from your Aunt Karen while she tried to rub your belly.
If you’re feeling disappointed, that’s okay. You put care and intention into your registry, and it’s natural to feel a little unseen if your choices weren’t considered. But you're not alone. Don't let the pregnancy hormones reduce you to tears. Your guests meant well even if they missed the mark, and there are practical, and kind ways to move forward so you still get what you need before baby arrives.
Use What You Were Given (or Don’t—That’s Your Choice!)
If you received disposable diapers you know for sure you won't use, you can donate them to a local women’s shelter or food bank or try return them to the store for store credit. Alternatively, you can sell them on a local buy/sell group and put that money toward cloth or you can just use them in the first few weeks postpartum when you’re recovering and adjusting. Some parents find having a few disposables on hand is helpful before easing into cloth anyway
You’re allowed to use what serves you, even if it wasn’t the original plan.
Start Small and Build Slowly
If you didn’t receive cloth diapers as gifts and the upfront cost of cloth will make it hard to have a full stash ready before baby comes, it doesn’t mean you can’t build your stash over time. Start with a few and wash more frequently at first, or do part-time cloth, part-time disposables in the beginning. You can always add more later. Many cloth diapering parents begin with a handful and grow their collection as budget allows.
Look for trial programs, purchase second hand cloth diapers (see sanitizing instructions here), and watch for sales, especially during Earth Day in April and Black Friday in November, to stretch your dollars.
Have The Host Help
If you know ahead of time that not many people are likely to purchase cloth diapers and you have a host willing to help out (say your Mom or friend is organizing and it's not a surprise) you could ask them to organize a group gift - your ultimate cloth diaper stash - and have everyone contribute cash towards that instead of bringing individual gifts.
Give Yourself Grace
Parenting is full of detours. What matters most is showing up with love, care, and intention. Whether you go 100% cloth, part-time, or have to pivot entirely, you're doing your best for your baby under your unique circumstances. One hiccup in your journey doesn’t cancel out your values or your plans. You’re still a cloth diapering parent—just taking a slightly different path to get there.
If you do want to create a registry, lots of new parents are using Babylist. That platform allows you to add items of all different kinds from many different stores all in one place for your guests to see.
Ultimately, enjoy your baby shower as much as you can, it's a beautiful milestone shared with family and friends.
