What do you need to start cloth diapering? 1 Cloth Diaper.
To be basic, one diaper is really where it all starts. Making the decision to put that first cloth diaper on baby's bum is the start of something amazing.
Remember, many families do part time cloth too or slowly build a diaper stash over time so you don't need to have the entire list on hand for day one. However you go about it, it's all good.
Here's a checklist of suggestions
Note: The list below assumes full time cloth diapering and washing every second day. Adjust to suit your family as required.
CLOTH DIAPERS
☐ 24-30 diaper changes if your baby is 0-6 months old.
☐ 16-20 diaper changes if your baby is 6+ months old.
(*For a detailed explanation of how to arrive at these numbers and what constitutes a 'diaper change', read this).
ACCESSORIES
☐ 2 Large wet bags or pail liners to hold your diapers between wash days.
☐ 2 Travel wet bags to hold diapers if you're using cloth out of the house.
☐ 1 Snappi pack or diaper pins IF you have chosen to use prefolds, preflats or flats.
☐ 1 Cloth safe diaper rash cream - You don't have to use any ointments, but if you need to treat a rash or just prefer a daily moisture barrier on the skin for prevention with sensitive babies, cloth safe options are best and it's good to have on hand in case you need it.
OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
I say optional here because you truly can cloth diaper without them, but they are nice to have in the right situations:
☐ Disposable liners - These aren't needed when baby is small, but they can be a lifesaver for dealing with sticky poops once baby is starting solids or for anyone who's a little apprehensive starting cloth (no matter baby's age).
☐ Diaper sprayer - Attaches to your toilet with no tools so you can spray solids into the toilet before storing your diapers between wash days.
☐ Wool dryer balls - You don't want to use traditional dryer sheets with your diapers, but if you want to soften fabrics, reduce static and cut down on dry time, dryer balls are the way to go.
☐ 24 Cloth wipes - If you want to save the most money and ditch disposable wipes while you're at it, you'll never regret cloth wipes. How to use cloth wipes.
